Pragyan Ojha and Deep Dasgupta had the task of selecting 2 playing XIs each, one as their IPL 2020 XI and another that they felt had the chance of beating 5-time champions Mumbai Indians.
- Virat Kohli and David Warner were missing from both Deep Dasgupta and Pragyan Ojha’s IPL 2020 XI
- Both Dasgupta and Ojha also didn’t pick Kagiso Rabada in their playing XIs that can take on MI
- KL Rahul and Jofra Archer were common in all 4 playing XIs picked by the two former India cricketers
Former India cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Pragyan Ojha both left out some big names like Virat Kohli, David Warner and Kagiso Rabada as they picked their IPL 2020 XIs and made a team that they feel could have a chance of beating Mumbai Indians if ever there was a match-up between the five-time champions and a side made up of players from the remaining 7 franchises.
Warner didn’t find a place in either of the teams despite scoring 548 runs in IPL 2020 to end up as the third highest scorer behind KL Rahul (670) and Shikhar Dhawan (618). Even Kohli didn’t make the cut after a “quiet season by his standards” in which he managed 466 runs at 42.36.
Here are the players who did make it to the list made by the ex-wicketkeeper Dasgupta and 3-time IPL winner Ojha.
Ojha picked Rohit Sharma as his captain and selected 5 players from Mumbai Indians, a team which he played for 4 seasons and won the IPL twice with them in 2013 and 2015.
PRAGYAN OJHA IPL 2020 XI: Rohit Sharma (MI), KL Rahul (KXIP), Ishan Kishan (MI), Suryakumar Yadav (MI), AB de Villiers (RCB), Ben Stokes (RR), Axar Patel (DC), R Ashwin (DC), Jofra Archer (RR), Trent Boult (MI), Jasprit Bumrah (MI).
“When you look at these 8 teams, sometimes you feel 11 players won’t do justice. I did not pick David Warner because as a captain I was very sure about Rohit Sharma because of the obvious reasons that he is the most successful captain in this tournament. I’m not missing Warner, you always see whether you are missing any player of not after making your playing XI. In this team I was not missing anybody, only bowler I was missing was Rashid Khan but then I have Ben Stokes and Trent Boult. ABD I couldn’t miss out because of the way he bats, I think I balanced it with Axar Patel and R Ashwin,” Ojha said on Sports Today.
DEEP DASGUPTA IPL 2020 XI: KL Rahul (KXIP), Mayank Agarwal (KXIP), Suryakumar Yadav (MI), AB de Villiers (RCB), Jos Buttler (RR), Hardik Pandya (MI), Jofra Archer (RR), Rashid Khan (SRH), Yuzvendra Chahal (RCB), Kagiso Rabada (DC), Jasprit Bumrah (MI).
“I’ve picked 6 batsmen and 5 bowlers which is a very straightforward combination, these guys have been brilliant. I don’t have Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma because there were better performers this season who had more impact on games. I’ll go with KL Rahul as my captain even though I didn’t agree with all the calls that he took but overall I kind of liked it,” Dasgupta said during the chat.
The two cricketers also named their playing XI’s which they think could have a chance of beating the mighty Mumbai Indians. Interestingly, Delhi Capitals pacer Kagiso Rabada didn’t find a place in either of the teams despite being the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2020 with 30 wickets.
PRAGYAN OJHA XI: KL Rahul, Chris Gayle (KXIP), Ambati Rayudu (CSK), Shreyas Iyer (DC), Ben Stokes, Jason Holder (SRH), Ravindra Jadeja (CSK), Jofra Archer, R Ashwin, T Natarajan (SRH), Varun Chakravarthy (KKR).
DEEP DASGUPTA XI: KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey (SRH), AB de Villiers, Jos Buttler, Ravindra Jadeja, Rashid Khan, Jofra Archer, Rashid Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, T Natarajan.
IPL 2020 XI WITHOUT KOHLI OR DHONI
“Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are the names you don’t want to miss out when making an IPL playing XI. But there are certain things you have to see in your XI, if they are fitting or not. As a captain also I’d like Rohit Sharma over Virat Kohli, I’m not comparing both but it’s just that I’ve played under Rohit as a bowler, I feel I had that extra cushion with him. Also if you see the success rate, Rohit is much higher than Virat. About MSD its the age factor. When you talk about this team, I have players who can give you 5-6 years of good cricket,” Ojha explained.
“I honestly did not think I would be making a playing XI without Rohit, Virat and MSD. But this is not about what people are capable of or what they have done in the past. I just looked at this year’s performances. My thought-process was exclusively based on IPL 2020, nothing more or nothing less,” Dasgupta said.
